Slipped deadlines and Attack!!!! 15
So we are here in the fourth week of my “Friendly Fridays” postings for Zineswap… and this is only my second post so far… and neither this nor the other was done on a Friday. With apologies to the good folk of Zineswap, and the countless millions out there no doubt hanging on my every word (ahem) - I don’t feel entirely bad about that, simply because it has a certain aptness to it. That’s how zine-ing goes sometimes. It fits in around the other things you have to do, but it goes on fitting in because it’s one of those things you really want to do.
It’s that that made me step back and think about what Zineswap said about Attack!!!! a few weeks back… “Wes is up to issue 14 of his zine Attack!!!! […] That’s one of the longest running titles we have in the archive…” - can this really be so? How have I managed that? It seems almost incredible to have got to issue 14 of anything, when sometimes just getting one new issue out can take years… It feels as if I haven’t been doing it for long enough to have got to an issue 14!
I can picture long-term followers of my sporadic output nodding in gruff assent. But the impression I get from chatting to other zinesters is that however I might agonise over my own self-made deadlines on the zines slipping by weeks and months, I’m far from alone and probably not even the worst. The real difference is whether you stick at it or not.
So… with that in mind… issue 15!
As explained in the last post, each issue of Attack!!!! at the moment is based around a different piece which originally appeared back in issue 5.
This time it’s the turn of Erica Viola’s ‘(go fish.)’, which is a story about… well, click Erica’s picture for the story… (which is copyright (c) Erica Viola 2006)
if you would like to be a part of Attack!!!! 15, you need to submit a creative response to the piece linked from Erica’s picture above. It can be writing, artwork or anything else… we’re not actively looking for music for this issue because we already have an exclusive original Steveless EP for it (yes really!) - but if you feel really inspired to write a new piece of music by ‘(go fish.)’, let us know. And anything else you think of you might want to do, get in touch. (No-one’s conceived a dance or a film in response to an Attack!!!! piece yet, so that could be a first). (Or a recipe). (Or a new breed of pigeon).
Email me at dotdashdash.dashdash@gmail.com by August 15th 2011 - I don’t accept everything I’m sent, so if you’re thinking of working on something big for it, feel free to email me first and check I think it can work for Attack!!!! : ). As things stand images need to be pure black and white (no colours or shades of grey) to work at their best in the final paper product, and historically we’ve only afforded each contributor one page of space for each issue. So short pieces best where writing’s concerned!
One final thing: it does need to be something that’s inspired specially in response to ‘(go fish.)’, not just something you think might fit because, for example it has a fish in it. Or, at least, I have to believe that’s the case…
What you get in return is your name in the zine, two complimentary copies, and we have live events sometimes where contributors get together and perform their work on stage! And I do my best to promote what else you’re doing through our Facebook, Twitter, and website and so on and so forth… speaking of which… that all needs updating… oh gawd…
